Like all other years, the Chakma community in Tripura, under the banner of Chakma National Council of India observe August 17 as their Black Day to mourn the illegal award of their homeland – Chittagong Hill Tracts to Pakistan on this day in 1947. It was Sir Cyrill Redcliff Boundary Commission that awarded the Chittagong Hill Tracts to Pakistan despite the fact that there were 97 percent non-Muslims.
It is to be mentioned here that the tragedy of Chakma community started since their Chittagong Hill Tracts were given to Pakistan despite more than 95 percent non-Muslim population resided there.
“Many think that Chakmas are migrants in the Northeast. But many of us have been in the Northeast even before partition. As our homeland Chittagong Hill Tracts were not merged with India, large portions of Chakmas in the region is still deprived of proper education, health facilities and other fundamental rights,”, added a Chakma leader. Protesting the illegal award of their homeland the Chakma tribes today held a protest demonstration near press club followed by a rally.
The Chakma community observes Black Day on August 17 as a reference to 1947 incident, living in Northeast and other parts of the country to recall that the deprivation of the Chakmas began due to the decision of the Redcliffe Boundary Commission.
