Unexpected deferment of exams sparked serious resentment among hundreds of students enrolled in different master degree programmes of Tripura University run directorate of distance education.
According to students, the exams of master degree courses are scheduled to start from August 24. But, the university directorate did not release any admit card till 24 hours before the exams. When students approached the concerned authorities they were informed that the exams had been deferred without explaining anything.
One of the student, who was preparing for her first paper scheduled on August 25 next told this reporter that the university authorities released the exam schedule earlier this month and directed all the students to fill applications. As per the schedule, all of us submitted applications and were on the last minute preparations for the papers. But, unexpectedly, the exams were deferred without even informing the students, the student added.
Earlier also, the distance education directorate came under scanner when hundreds of students gathered in front of the department after being not convinced with their results. “The distance mood of education is preferred by people associated with various professions as they can easily complete their left over education through this without harming the career. But, unfortunately, Tripura University students are facing trouble due to the ostensible negligence from the part of the authorities” a student of third semester alleged adding that he has had two back papers in the third semester even after writing well in the exams and if he was not allowed to clear the papers this year he have to start the course once again from the beginning.
Meanwhile, In-charge of the distance education professor Goutam Chakma, when contacted, said, the deferment was a result of the mass agitation of students unhappy with their results. The students who have got back papers in the third semester have demonstrated several times before the department seeking reexamination. According to the University regulations, reexamination is not possible unless the academic council of the university passes any resolution.
Thus, a meeting of academic council has been convened on Monday next to take a final call on the issue, Chakma told this correspondent adding that after the meeting the final schedule of exams would be published. However, he remained tight-lipped to comment as to why the students were not informed of the development taking place about their exams.
