In yet another landmark judgment, the High Court of Tripura today ruled that Tripura Royal family had no ownership rights on Neermahal - one of the premier tourist destination of the state and the only water palace of Eastern India.
A division bench of Chief Justice AK Kureshi and Justice Arindam Lodh rejected the arguments advanced by the respondents and clearly stated that the property solely “belongs to the state government”, said Advocate General Arun Kanti Bhowmik.
In a short telephonic conversation, Bhowmik told this reporter that the judgement gone in favour of the state government. “We won the case. The Court observed that in the year 1974, Neermahal has been handed over to the state government by the then royal head. Now, there is no element of doubt that the property belongs to the state government” Bhowmik said over phone.
“The Court also clearly underscored that the present royal head Pradyot Kishore Debbarman and his mother Bibhu Kumari Devi have no rights stake claim of the ownership of this property,” Bhowmik added.
Reportedly, the row over the ownership of Neermahal which was built by Tripura’s last monarch Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya was initiated when Bibhu Kumari Devi, the present woman head of the royal family petitioned in a lower court claiming the ownership of this property. The lower court had also given the verdict on the side of the royal family triggering tension.
The High Court, however, took up the issue as public interest litigation. And, the verdict of the litigation has been pronounced today. It is also worthy to be mentioned here that lakhs of tourists visit Neermahal all throughout the year.
