Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday said that a total of 2000 hectare lands in Tripura certified for organic farming. He said, "The crops to be produced from these organic lands in Tripura will be eligible to be sold in European markets." He said that in the case of organic farming, the production will be less but the farmers will be benefited.
Mr. Deb was addressing a gathering of farmers in a programme of District Level Kisan Mela & Exhibition at Kakraban in South Tripura district.
"Compared to the normal farming with fertilizers and pesticides the organic farming will have less production but then the farmers will be able to sell the crops like paddy farmed in organic land at a very hefty cost," adding to this Mr. Deb said, "The Tripura government is working in line with the central government's policy to double up the farmers' income in the state."
He said, "The farmers are now able to sell their farming or agricultural products without the middleman who once used to deprive the farmers from the actual price of their products." He however said that the BJP-IPFT government has started procuring paddy directly from the farmers across the state with support from Food Corporation of India (FCI).
He said, "The government now targets to procure a total of 3 lakhs Metric Ton (MT) of paddy from the farmers by three or four years from now."
