MHA parliamentary committee to meet Indigenous leaders on 20

AGARTALA:

A crucial meeting has been convened at Guwahati in connection with the 6th schedule amendment on January 20 next. Almost all the tribal parties and stakeholders will take part in the meeting to discuss the pros and cons of the amendments. Members of the parliamentary standing committee Ministry of Home Affairs will preside over the meeting.

“There are several issues pertaining to the 125th amendment of the constitution which will be discussed in the meeting. Civil societies that are being noted for being vocal for the interest of indigenous people across the North East region, except Meghalaya, are scheduled to participate in the meeting. Issues related to the Citizenship Amendment Act may also come up for discussion in the meeting” said an IPFT leader.

The leader who also wished not to be named informed the media that a meeting was also scheduled with Home Minister Amit Shah in Shillong but due to some reasons it had been cancelled.

“Regional political fronts which are vehemently opposing the CAA and demanding more power to the district councils shall speak their side in the meeting. A meeting has been also slated to be held in presence of Home Minister Amit Shah in Shillong but it was cancelled and the parliamentary standing committee has been sent otherwise to meet the stakeholders” the leader said.

Notably, the five-member Parliamentary Committee headed by Rajya Sabha member Anand Sharma met as many as 27 tribal organisations and institutions along with the representatives of the KHADC, GHADC and JHADC.

“We have met the various stakeholders representing various tribal organizations and the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) about their views on the Constitutional Amendment which deals with the district councils,” Sharma told reporters in Shillong.

The meeting of January 20 will be held at Radisson Blue hotel located at Guwahati. The committee will be submitting its report in the parliament by March next.

On the other hand, the JMCAA leaders who had arrived the state this morning would also join the meeting. The six member team which failed to meet the Home Minister after repeated attempts expressed disappointment over the issue. “This is a sheer insult of us” Anthony Debbarma convener of the committee told reporters.
