Media in Tripura asked to refrain from unverified news on COVID-19

Apprising the media in Tripura of the Supreme Court's direction on taking effective measures to check circulation of fake news or information on COVID-19, the Secretary of the Information and cultural affair (ICA) department of the state Shailendra Singh on Friday urged upon to refrain from unverified news amid lockdown which causes panic at large.

Mr. Singh today met the representatives of different media houses of the state to discuss the compliance of SC's direction.

Quoting Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the DG of World Health Organization which perhaps is put in the record of proceedings of the SC's WP, Mr. Singh said, "Fake news spreads faster than virus and is just as dangerous."

During the meeting, he stressed on ensuring that unverified news capable of causing panic is not disseminated. He moving in line with the SC's direction has later urged upon the media persons in the state to maintain a strong sense of responsibility on this and refrain from the circulation of fake and unverified news on COVID-19.

Meantime, reading out the cause of fake news of the extension of lockdown for more than three months, Mr. Singh said that such panic-driven migration has caused untold suffering to those who believed and acted on such news. He said such fake news is causing panic mostly among the migrant labours working in the cities.

ICA Director Ratan Biswas who remained present in the meeting, however, said that the state's cybercrime cell of police is putting close eyes on fake news on COVID-19 in social media.
