About 100 to 150 families residing in the river banks of Howrah are facing serious danger of soil erosion due to the unabated and illegal mining of sand at Resham Bagan area located at the city outskirts. The locals alleged that the hooligans who were involved in that malpractice paid no heed to the law and order situation and also, sometime, threaten the locals of when they try to resist the illegal activities.
This practice, however, has also increased the vehicle plying in the narrow domestic lanes making the roads vulnerable to road accidents. The disturbing noise and emission of large scale smoke by the high-yielding machineries have turned the life next to hell.
Speaking to this correspondent, one of the local feared if monsoon return in its ugliest face, once again, many houses would be engulfed by the river itself due to the extensive extraction of soil. “This extensive soil extraction has exposed the entire area vulnerable to soil erosion. And, if the water swell in it’s usually pace like yesteryears, many houses will be caved in” the local said who wished remain anonymous.
He also alleged that the people who control this racket had some influential backing. “Whenever we tried to protest we have faced threats. No one from the political or administrative sector came to the forefront to speak of our side. Apart from the extraction, the large scale emission of smoke and indiscriminate plying of heavy soil laden vehicle has turned the life undesirable” he added.
However, two separate complaint letters have been forwarded to the PCCF and SDM in the November last year but no noticeable steps have been taken. “We have complained to the concerned authorities regarding this daylight exploitation of nature in late last year. But, no steps have been taken yet to stop this practice” the locals complained.
