Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has today directed the food department to initiate inquiry against the middlemen meddling in the crop industry holding them responsible for the excessive hike in the prices of vegetables.
“Proper steps should be taken against the people who are intentionally hiking the prices of vegetables. There are plenty of opportunists who are interfering between the producer and the trader leading to an excessive hike in the prices of vegetables. This practice has to be stopped immediately. The food department is needed to take steps”, the Chief Minister told a gathering organized to mark the observance of state-level co-operative week.
He also took dig at the previously ruling CPIM for intentionally weakening the co-operative societies. “The party (CPIM) which has ruled for 25 long years did nothing to improve the financial situation of co-operative societies; rather, they kept pressurizing the societies. Party offices, meetings, and other party programmes are, once, arranged by the money of co-operative societies. But, the new government has stopped this malpractice. Now it is the time for the societies to grow and become self-reliant” he added.
Charting down the present statistics of co-operative societies, he said, in the year of 2016-17 the number of cooperative societies are 7,124 which later increased up to 7,206. But, as soon as the new government comes to power, the registration of new societies gained pace. In the year 2018, the number of registered societies stood at 8,079 which this year took another big leap and now the number stands at 8,258, he added saying that “the numbers says it all”.
He also urged the co-operative societies to put forth more professionalism in their work culture so that new heights could be achieved. “Being an egg deficient state, Tripura imports eggs from Andhra Pradesh. If the state people, through co-operative, take a pledge to make this ate self-reliant in eggs, both the state and its economy will be benefitted” he pointed out.
He also informed the gathering that two eggplants (hatcheries) are being set up in Bamutia and Bisalgarh where 75 lakh of eggs would be generated. He also advised to set up piggeries, duckeries, and fisheries through co-operative in order to make Tripura self-reliant in food. Speaking on the loss-making co-operatives, he said, “this is the time to perform and hard work ensures profit.”
Among the others, Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath and Agriculture Minister Pranajit Singha Roy also spoke on the projects undertaken to improve co-operative societies. MLA Brishketu Dev Barma, Chief Secretary U Venkateshwarlu and other higher officials of the departments also attended the function.
