City police initiates massive action against 'digital gambling'

AGARTALA:

Agartala city police has initiated a massive operation against digital gambling—Teer and Ending from last few days in an attempt to put a check on the unlawfully spread racket throughout the city.

Speaking to this correspondent, SDPO Dhruba Nath said, earlier we use to book such criminals under Tripura gambling act. But, this time we have imposed some non-bailable IPC sections so that people associated with this illegal activity could be sent behind the bars permanently.

Reportedly, digital gambling options—Teer and Ending, which have attracted massive attention of the gamblers in last few years put forth serious economical hurdles before the gambling enthusiast. Sources said, the gambling agents select some crowded areas such as motor-stand, rickshaw stopovers, overly crowded pan shops and other such corners to allure people. After creating a chain of customers, everything goes online. The bidding, selection of numbers, money transfer all the transactions were done online—through What’sApp, Facebook messenger and e-payment apps like Paytm, Mobikweek, Google pay etc., sources in the police department said.

“It is one of the unique kinds of gambling. Gamblers were given some suggestive numbers to anticipate a number which will appear in the day’s chart. Once the number is selected, the gambler gets paid. The website where the results were published said to be operated from Shillong” one of the highly placed police officer said who wished remain unnamed.

However, on the police action, SDPO said, for the first time we have got a specific complaint from someone. The whistleblower, who was also earlier associated with this trade, has later realized that his mistakes and filed a complaint with the East Tripura police station. “I realized that this profession is not only spoiling my life but also ruining houses of many people. A large number of people are now debt ridden for this illicit activity” he told this reported in the condition of anonymity.

However, police have already started extensive raids to nail all the accused named in the complaint. Altogether, 8 to 9 people were named in the FIR and we are on the verge of tracing everyone. Already we have arrested on person in connection with the case. He was booked under IPC section 294 (A), 420, 506 and 120 (B). All the others will be traced soon; sources in the police department informed this website.
