Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb today observed that “Check dams” that will be dug up under Tripura JICA project would boost up the rural economy and would also contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of water conservation and harvesting.
“Under the JICA project 1477 check dams will be constructed in various parts of the state centering the JFMCs. The Rural Development Department already constructed 332 check dams. These dams will act as a game changer for the rural economy as well as for the health situations in the remote areas of the state,” the Chief Minister told a seminar organized at Pragna Bhavan today.
In the rural areas, he said, still the tribal people are bereft of clean drinking water. Every year many people die of waterborne diseases in the remote parts of the state. Once the dams are constructed, the problem related to drinking water will be resolved, he added.
On bamboo-based Industry, the Chief Minister said, Bamboo is being produced in about 2 lakh hectare of land in state. The state has potential to work more and more in bamboo based industry. Moreover, he said, the center has approved 60% rebate for the state in under national bamboo project. Now the onus is on the departments involved in the project to attract more and more people in bamboo production, he observed.
Speaking on the much ambitious second phase of the JICA project, he continued, JICA is a big project. We need to work hard to make it a successful venture. We also have to satisfy our Japan counterpart, he concluded.
On the other hand, Forest Minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia said, the forest department is taking numerous initiatives to promote bamboo cultivation in the rural areas of the state. During his speech, Chief Secretary U Venkateshwarlu proposed to set up bamboo gene pool and bamboo park in the state.
Among the others, First Secretary Japan Ambassy New Delhi Tetsuya Uetake, PCCF Alind Rastogi, professor of Kyoto Univesity Japan Shujo Shivata and other higher officials also discussed various issues during the programme.
