Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has on today said that the Bru rehabilitation process would be completed within six months of time as per the agreement signed yesterday.
Referring to the quadripartite agreement signed yesterday at New Delhi he said, “A new census or identification drive will be executed within 15 days from today. As per the agreement, the state government will provide land; the process including identification and allotment of land will take time,”
While conveying his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah for the historic decision, the Chief Minister said, “Around 34,000 Bru refugees will be settled in separate clusters across the state. The entire rehabilitation process will take at least six months.”
“The state government doesn’t have much Khas lands. If any Forest land needs to be diverted, the process will take time (around three months) and a large amount will be required for this purpose. In case of purchasing private land, the expenditure will be higher.
The state government already sought assistance from Centre in this regard. However, the state government will soon undertake a drive for land identification,” Deb said in a press conference at Civil Secretariat.
The Chief Minister said, if any of the Bru families wants to go back to Mizoram or the families already moved back, the package announced by the Central Government would remain same for them.
“Though, over 34,000 Reang people continued to live as Refugee in their own country for the past 23 years, the previous state government didn’t take any effective step for permanent settlement of Brus in Tripura. The issue could have been solved long time ago.”
“At such a situation, the step taken by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shri Amit Shah for the permanent settlement of Brus in Tripura is historic because if the 34000 people of around 5400 families continue to live in such Refugee camps—it will not only destroy their generation but also affect the entire country specially Tripura,” Shri Deb said.
The Chief Minister also stated that the local Janajati (Scheduled Tribe) families would now share their facilities with the Bru people - it’s a big instance of good mentality. “Such step was never taken in any state of the country before,” the Chief Minister said.
Replying to a query, the Chief Minister also stated that he had discussions with the Home Minister about the rehabilitation of the local non-tribal families of Kanchanpur who had to leave their place.
He also assured that the state government would take steps so that the displaced families get rehabilitation. The state government would also take action against the miscreants, he added.
Meanwhile, as per the pact inked between Centre, Governments of Tripura and Mizoram and Bru leaders in New Delhi yesterday, the Bru families would get a 40 by 30 feet plot each along with a fixed deposit of Rs 4 lakhs, cash assistance of Rs 5,000 per month and free ration for 2 years.
Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Verma, Revenue minister N.C. Debbarma and Education Minister Ratanlal Nath were also present in the press conference.
