The dramatic investigation on the Rs 600 crore PWD scam seemed to have taken a new twist with Former PWD minister Badal Chowdhury, who is a prime accused in the case, alleging that he had been manhandled during the course of investigation.
Chowdhury had been admitted to GBP hospital since yesterday and his defense counsel had raised many questions over his sudden illness accusing the police. They have alleged that he was manhandled during the process of interrogation by the investigating officer.
Speaking to the media persons, advocate Raghunath Mukherjee, who had been representing Chowdhury in the case, said, Chowdhury fall ill after he is assaulted physically during the interrogation. The investigating officer learnt to have misbehaved and tortured Chowdhury physically. When the situation deteriorated, he is admitted to local hospital and later referred to GBP hospital, Mukherjee said.
“After he is shifted to GBP hospital, he has informed us as to how he is subjected to physical torture and assault during his interrogation in the central jail” Mukherjee said accusing the police of violating the police code. He also held the police responsible for his sudden health issues. However, Chowdhury was admitted GBP hospital with complaints of ‘chest pain’ and ‘headache’.
On the other hand, the allegations were blatantly refuted by the police department. Replying to the queries of media, investigating officer, Ajay Kumar Das said, allegations can be raised against anyone. But the fact is, each and every rule is being due respect while interrogating Chowdhury.
“CCTV cameras have been fixed in the room where he is interrogated. The jailor of Tripura central correctional home remains present during the course of interrogation. There is no scope of violating the rules. Since this is a sensitive case, all the necessary efforts are being put to brush aside any element of doubt in the case” Das told media.
