88 insurgent cadres in Tripura to lay down arms, inks peace pact with Centre

AGARTALA:

In another major success towards ensuring law and order in the North East the Union Home Ministry today signed a peace pact with the insurgent groups of the Northeastern states of Tripura after the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) cadres agreed to lay down arms and join the mainstream. The peace pact was signed by the Union Home Ministry, Tripura government and the NLFT (SD).

However, as the agreement of providing benefits to the NLFT surrendered cadres under the Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation Scheme, 2018 of the Ministry of Home Affairs was signed today, the NLFT (SD) leader Sabir Dev Burma said a total of 88 insurgents of the group shall join the mainstream shunning violence and laying down arms on August 13.

The statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs today stated, "The Tripura govt. will help the surrendered cadres in housing, recruitment, education, etc. The central government will consider the proposals of the Tripura government regarding economic development of tribal areas of the state."

The memorandum was signed by Satyendra Garg, Joint Secretary (Northeast) of Ministry of Home Affairs; Kumar Alok, Additonal Chief Secretary (Home), Tripura; and Sabir Kumar Debbarma and Kajal Debbarma of NLFT-SD. Joint Secretary North East in the Ministry of Home Affairs expressed confidence that the agreement will give an impetus to continued peaceful situation in the North East.
