The College of Fisheries under Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Manipur today celebrated the 19th National Fish Farmers' Day at Lembucherra, West Tripura.
His Excellency, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, Hon'ble Governor of Tripura graced the auspicious occasion as the chief guest amidst the presence of Prof M. Premjit 'Singh, Vice Chancellor, CAU, Imphal, Shri Rameshwar Das, Secretary (Fisheries), Govt. of Tripura, Dr. P.K. Pandey, Dean, College of Fisheries and other dignitaries.
On the arrival of the Chief Guest, plantation of tree was done in the college campus. The programme commenced with national anthem followed by inaugural song performed by the college students. To commemorate the occasion, five progressive fish farmers from different states of NE India were awarded with Best Fish Farmer award, comprising a citation, certificate and cash prize of Rs. 4,000/-.
Moreover, fifty selected fish farmers from Tripura were distributed high quality fish seeds of carps, magur and pabda and CA U-COF fish feed under various programme run by the college (Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav). Various extension publications prepared by the college and KVK, Sepahijala were released by the chief guest.
Addressing the gatherings, Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, Hon'ble Governor of Tripura mentioned the genesis and importance of celebration of National Fish Farmers' Day. His Excellency duly recognized the contribution of College of Fisheries in development of fisheries in the NE region in general and Tripura in particular. He also mentioned about Central Government's initiative to create separate ministry for Fisheries, which shows the focus of the government to stimulate the growth in the sector. He also gave the slogan of `Ek Tripura, Shresth Tripura' with a paradigm shift in the concept of development with the purity of soul. The servitude should be the main driving force in governance.
Further, Prof. M. Premjit Singh in his special address briefed the success of the Central Agricultural University and College of Fisheries as well in the development of NE region in last three decades. He stressed the importance of development of fisheries sector in doubling the farm income by 2022. He also suggested to increase the fish feed production in NE region with locally available ingredients to minimize the cost of production.
Shri Rameshwar Das gave a brief account of the fisheries development in the state of Tripura in last few years and complemented the college for its constant support to the state. He placed on record the need for establishment of Fish Producer Society in near future in the state of Tripura.
Dr. P.K. Pandey, Dean, College of Fisheries in his address briefed the functions and activities of the college in teaching, research and extension activities in fisheries, which guided this college to become one of the premier institutions in fisheries among the 28 fisheries college in the country.
The programme was followed by inauguration of an exhibition at College by Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, Hon'ble Governor of Tripura. A Farmer-Scientist interaction was also organized to bring out the issues, faced by the farmers of NE region and to address their problems by the experts. The programme was attended by more than three hundred persons including farmers, scientist, students, scholars and other invited officials from the line departments. The programme ended with vote of thanks to chair.
