Tripura health minister say no to police escort after doctor drag and thrash incident

AGARTALA:

At a time when the state health and family welfare department under the influence of Minister Sudip Roy Barman is contemplating to get doctors from abroad in the state and ensure quality health care facilities for the people of the state and neighbouring Bangladesh, spontaneous attack upon the state doctors have brought a major insecurity in doctors' fraternity.

In the backdrop of instances of abuse, manhandling, physical assault of the doctors and health staff across the state, the state health and family welfare minister Sudip Roy Barman has decided to surrender his police security until the state home department ensures of safety to the doctors of this state. This perhaps has brought a major debacle between the two ministries of this state. However, the Chief Minister who also holds the home port folio on Friday morning has assured of installing police check post at IGM and GBP Hospital so as to restrict untoward incidents with the concerned doctors and other health staff.

Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman in a letter to the Chief Minister today stated, "The government doctors and other staff have been feeling highly insecure working at various government hospitals." He continued saying, "This is sending a negative signal in the kinds of fresh graduates and in the coming days they might opt out of the state of Tripura."

He later in his letter said, "I think it is improper and unethical for myself moving with escorts and thus I am compelled to surrender my escorts until the things get normalised with adequate security arrangements for the doctors."
