Tripura, Bangladesh celebrate international mother language day

AGARTALA:

The Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh and the Information and Cultural Affairs of the Government of Tripura observed International Mother Language Day in Tripura on Wednesday.

Subsequently, floral tributes were paid to the martyrs of February 21 at Rabindra Bhavan.

Deputy High Commissioner Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain, ICA Minister Bhanu Lal Saha remained present in the program.

Cultural programmes were held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan as well, with pomp and gaiety. The occasion was graced by a number of Tripura officials, Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Bhanu Lal Saha and others.

In 1952, on this day, hundreds of students from Dhaka University took to the street protesting against the decision of the Pakistani government to impose Urdu as the national language for the Bengalis in East Pakistan (Bangladesh). The police opened fire on the students and several of them were killed in the incident.
