CPI-M urges Tripura government to help flood-hit Kerala

AGARTALA:

The CPI-M on Sunday urged the BJP government in Tripura to contribute funds to the flood-hit people in Kerala, pointing out that no BJP-ruled state has yet donated any amount to the southern state.

"Though no BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) ruled state in the country has contributed any amount to Kerala, we urge upon the Tripura government to help the state (Kerala) and its hapless people," Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) central committee member Bijan Dhar told the media.

He said: "Some non-BJP ruled states and many organisations and individuals have come forward to help the state (Kerala), which was hit by one of the worst natural catastrophes of the century."

Dhar, also the secretary of the Tripura state committee of the Left party, said that the CPI-M would launch an 11-day long fund collection drive on August 21 across the state to help the affected people of Kerala.

"We do not know whether we would be able to collect funds in the state as a massive political violence has been unleashed by the ruling BJP activists to destroy the democratic activities of the opposition parties. Everyday, two-to-three attacks are being carried out on the opposition parties, especially the Left parties," he added.

"The democratic atmosphere has been entirely destroyed by the BJP-IPFT (Indigenous People's Front of Tripura) alliance government after they came to power five months ago."
